Can we do stroke test with 4-20mA source?

Is it possible to stroke test the valve with the 4-20mA source while we have foundation fieldbus type positioner?

stroke test the valve with the 4-20mA source

Positioner make is METSO, ND9103-FX.

It is not possible to do the stroke test using a 4 to 20 mA source meter for Foundation-Fieldbus (FF) based instruments.

You can connect the HART communicator (FF type) to the valve positioner and carry out the control valve stroke test.

You can also use the valve positioner display for stroke test (some vendors provide this option).

Yes, it is possible to perform a stroke test with a 4-20mA source. A stroke test is a calibration test that checks the full range of motion of a control valve to ensure it is working properly.

To perform a stroke test with a 4-20mA source, you will need to connect the source to the valve positioner. The positioner receives the 4-20mA signal and translates it into a position signal that adjusts the valve’s position.

Once the 4-20mA source is connected to the positioner, you can perform the stroke test by varying the input signal between 4mA and 20mA, while monitoring the valve’s position output. The position output should correspond to the expected range of motion for the valve.

It’s important to note that stroke testing should only be performed by trained professionals with the appropriate equipment and safety precautions in place. If you are not familiar with the process, it’s best to consult with a qualified technician or engineer.
