First off I know talk of hydrogen is always controversial but hear me out
I’m assuming that solar will continue to get cheaper so we’ll keep building more and end up with a huge surplus at some times but a shortage occasionally. I live in fairly northern Canada so my summer production is bonkers and my winter is very low.
Many people have suggested using the surplus solar energy to make clean hydrogen through electrolysis. If the power was going to waste I would assume this could be affordable. With a surplus of hydrogen couldn’t we convert natural gas power plants? Has anyone tried that? It burns very cleanly and could help during the “dark times”, like winter here.
Or am I out to lunch?
