In most modern instruments the signal may be programmed to go to either maximum or minimum depending upon end user’s requirement.

What will happen if thermocouple grounded with its sheath .
If Thermocouple grounded, then the temperature gradient will be effected i.e. The two different metals Junction temperatures may change or there will be considerable deviation on the output milli voltage which finally lead to wrong temperature readings.
Sometimes depending on type of ground, it may give zero voltage also as there will be no temperature gradient exists between metals. We cannot expect the result as these depends on type of the problems. These are just expecting probabilities.

Most process applications would either be fail high or low signal given the immediate process application. In process industries themperature measuring devices are used to both monitor temperature and serve as protection for equipment.
