What is Bernoulli's Principle? - Theory

Bernoulli’s principle, also known as Bernoulli’s theorem, is a fundamental concept in fluid dynamics that describes the behavior of fluid flow. It was formulated by the Swiss mathematician and physicist Daniel Bernoulli in the 18th century.

Bernoulli’s principle states that in a steady flow of an ideal fluid (a fluid with no viscosity or internal friction) along a streamline, the total mechanical energy of the fluid remains constant. This principle is derived from the conservation of energy principle, which states that energy cannot be created or destroyed but only transferred or transformed from one form to another.

The principle can be stated mathematically as:

where:
P is the pressure exerted by the fluid,
ρ is the density of the fluid,
v is the velocity of the fluid,
g is the acceleration due to gravity, and
h is the height of the fluid above a reference point.

This equation shows that the total mechanical energy of the fluid is composed of three components: the pressure energy (P), the kinetic energy (1/2 ρv²), and the gravitational potential energy (ρgh). According to Bernoulli’s principle, the sum of these energies remains constant along a streamline.

The principle can be understood in terms of the relationship between fluid speed and pressure. When the fluid speed increases, the pressure decreases, and vice versa. This inverse relationship between velocity and pressure is commonly observed in various fluid flow situations, such as the flow of air over an airplane wing, the flow of water through pipes, or even the flow of blood through arteries.

It’s important to note that Bernoulli’s principle is a simplification that assumes ideal fluid behavior and neglects factors such as viscosity, turbulence, and compressibility. In real-world situations, these factors can have significant effects on fluid flow, and more complex equations and models are required to accurately describe the behavior of fluids. Nonetheless, Bernoulli’s principle provides a valuable framework for understanding the basic principles of fluid dynamics.
